Our History
With over 30 years of experience in the landscaping industry MD Dave Baldwin started working in horticulture at only 16 years old, working initially for a commercial nursery, he then developed his skills in landscaping, returning to plants in 2001.
Quercus began back in April 2011, it was a much smaller business back then, Dave worked from a small, rented space in a local nursery. The business blossomed and soon outgrew the space, which provided the springboard to purchase the land in 2017, where the nursery is now based down here on the sunny South-coast.
As with all businesses in the UK and Europe, Brexit certainly brought in a new layer of pressures on deliveries from the continent and increased costs that the business had to pivot and adapt to. Developing our own contract growing space was the natural step to take that has mitigated a part of these pressures.
We must be made of tough stuff, as not soon after Brexit covid arrived. This was brutal for commercial sales – we had to find a way to adapt rapidly and started a small landscape maintenance company to compensate for the losses and diversify the income into the business. People are at the core of our company culture, we want to keep our tight knit team together and their livelihoods secure.
In 2021 the business became the sole ownership of Dave Baldwin, enabling him to make further decisions to enhance the Quercus offer. Katy Jones joined the business in 2022 to run the administrative side of the businesses and the operations – bringing with her over 20 years of experience from a multi-disciplinary landscaper in Surrey. We haven’t looked back, Katy’s presence has brought instant impact to the processes and organisation within the business.
Quercus Plant Centre has evolved independently of Quercus Nursery, enabling members of the public to visit, browse and purchase the high-quality plants we have become known for, we have also delved into the interior plant market by gaining Quirky Plants – supplying the benefits of interior plants to customers across the UK. This happy family of Quercus Businesses now supports commercial and domestic clients with everything they need.
